gassho-zukuri thatched cottages and temple
白川郷の合掌造り民家とお寺 village of Shirakawa-go (Shirakawa-mura, Ogi-machi) in the old Hida region (present Gifu prefecture) of central Honshu, Japan. The thatched rooves are regularly replaced as a community effort. The 'pond'-like areas in the foreground are rice paddies in other seasons.
