白川郷 合掌造り 飛騨地方 岐阜県 Designated a Unesco World Heritage site for its traditional steep thatched-roof architecture known as 'gassho-zukuri' 合掌造り . ''Gassho'' refers to hands placed together in prayer, technically the steep rooves resemble the triangular form the arms create while in prayer. The mountain village of Shirakawa-go is located deep in the mountains of the Hida region, which receives heavy snowfalls.
