Winter Grass

Texas Wintergrass is one tough seed to harvest. The grains are big and heavy like wheat, but with a twisted 3-inch long awn and a barb at one end. It's amazing to watch the seed transform as it falls from the stalk, the end starts to twist around itself, and then bends about 90 degrees - I guess the bending drives it into the ground so it won't blow away. Children call this speargrass with good reason.
