Ruins of the imperial complex of Baiae
Baiae was a coastal resort on the northwest shore of the Gulf of Naples in ancient Italy. It was fashionable and notorious for its hedonistic offerings and the attendant rumours of corruption and scandal. Its ruins were largely submerged by local volcanic activity by the time of the Renaissance. What is left of Baia is now part of the comune of Bacoli, near Naples.
