ESO is the best suitable platform for mega science projects in astronomy as it develops and operates world-class telescopes in Chile — La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor — on behalf of its fifteen Member States. It builds ALMA together with international partners, and designs the European Extremely Large Telescope, which will be the biggest eye on the sky. The year 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of ESO.
