It's Been A Wild Ride

The eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge has been beaten up, battered on, and broken down since it was reconfigured to accommodate automobile traffic in 1963. Since then, its ushered 280,000 daily commuters across the Bay, survived a plane crash, endured countless wayward watercraft, and been shaken hard enough to fall down. But it's still standing, and today it carries its final passenger. The new eastern span is certainly an upgrade. Sleek and sturdy. Shiny, too. At $6.4 billion you'd certainly hope so. (That's billion with a B.) Built to withstand whatever sort of impact or shaking anyone or anything can throw at it. Fingers crossed. If the past serves as any indication, there's plenty of punishment left in store.
