the noren curtain on the shop front of a Japanese tea tradesman with a lengthy history. The Japanese kanji characters read 'Uji cha' 宇治 茶 Cha is tea. The Uji region (very close to Kyoto) is known for its high-quality tea. Traditional shops and restaurants hang similar noren curtains on their shop fronts － the old version of a shop neon sign, and a sign that the shop is open for business.
